Nearly a century ago, the "Boiler Code" from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was developed to establish standard rules for the construction of steam boilers and other pressure vessels. Born to promote safety through pressure integrity, it also furnished standards that any state could use for boilers installed within its borders. Today, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is used in over 70 countries, and is adopted (in whole or in part) by all 50 states and numerous municipalities and territories of the United States, and all of the provinces of Canada.
